& Jobs
Traineeships
(up to six months)
What you can expect on a traineeship:
- a work placement that will last anywhere between six weeks to six months. There are lots of different industries to choose from e.g. dental nursing, construction, marketing etc.
- time to study and improve your Maths and English skills (if you didn’t get these at GCSE grade 4)
- to learn about what you need to make you ready for the job market
- some help with your travel and/or lunch costs (check this with each provider)
- support from your tutor to move on to your next step, e.g. an apprenticeship.
Traineeships prepare you for an apprenticeship
You can start these any time during the year.
You must be:
- 16 to 24 years old
- unemployed or working less than 16 hours with little or
- no work experience
- eligible to live and work in the UK.
Apprenticeships
(12 - 36 months)
What you can expect on a apprenticeship:
You will spend some of your time working and some of your time (usually about 20 per cent of your working week, which is about one day) studying for your job related qualification, e.g NVQ in Project Management. The grades you get at GCSE along with the experience you have in a subject area usually determines whether you start at Level 2 or Level 3.
To apply for an apprenticeship
You must be:
- be 16+ by the end of the summer holidays
- not be studying full-time
- be eligible to live and work in the UK.
What could I earn as an apprentice?
There are different rates of minimum pay for apprentices depending on the age and year of the apprenticeship being followed.
Why should you apply?
- Earn a real wage!
- Be trained in the skills employers want.
- Set yourself up for the future.
What if I cannot achieve GCSE Maths & English at Level 4?
You will be required to complete a Maths and English initial assessment and will now be able to be supported through Level 1 Maths and English functional skills as part of the apprenticeship programme.
Individuals with a learning difficulty or disability can now access a Level 2 intermediate apprenticeship as long as they can achieve an entry Level 3 qualification during their apprenticeship.
Foundation learning or study programme
If you don’t quite feel ready for sixth form, college or an apprenticeship, you might want to consider a foundation learning or study programme.
What you can expect:
- develop your employability skills
- courses to range anywhere from one week to up to three months
- courses start at different times throughout the year
